There are a variety of ways that you can get involved and support Hutt Valley High School to provide the widest possible range of opportunities for our students. Please note that school policy requires that any volunteers working directly with students must be vetted by the police. Roles include:
Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees, as the governing entity of the school, requires volunteers to provide the governance function of the school. While this is a small group, it is vital to the school’s success and relies on people who are willing to offer a substantial and on-going commitment of time to the school. Contact the Chair of the Board of Trustees, Dr Peter Stevens, through the Principal.
Whanau Advisory Group
This is a group which meets to promote Maori students’ success in education. Contact our Maori teacher, hine.amoamo@hvhs.school.nz
Sporting Involvement
Many of our sports teams are run with the assistance of parents and members of the public who care about sports. Sport is a great way to advance students’ personal growth , both through physical well-being and health, and mentally through self-discipline and involvement with a team who have shared goals. Students meet others whom they would not normally meet within their classroom setting and so increase their network of friendships. At Hutt Valley we have over 800 students playing regular competition sport, involving the assistance of well over 200 volunteers, including 50 teachers. We always need more help to run this large enterprise, which the Director of Sport Jude Glenny is thrilled to see continuing to grow. To say that a sports programme of this size is not possible without the support is a cliché, but it is absolutely true.
We need coaches, managers, and people willing to provide transport either on a regular basis or for occasional trips, members of the various Sports Committees and volunteers for fund-raising.
Please contact sport@hvhs.school.nz
Arts and Culture
The Music Department welcomes support from individuals willing to lead, manage and/or play in groups within the wider music programme. Choral assistance is a particular need. Contact the Head of Department, Grace.Davey@hvhs.school.nz

Past Pupils and Friends
This is a group of our ex-students who meet regularly both as a social activity and to offer practical support to the school and its students. They also welcome news of ex-students’ activities around the world. Contact ppfa@hvhs.school.nz
Archives
We have an active Archives group who preserve items of interest in the school’s history. They always welcome donations of memorabilia, photographs etc, as well as accounts of school life in times gone by. They also welcome the efforts of volunteers offering their time to help with this work. Contact archives@hvhs.school.nz.
Special Projects
The school sometimes has special projects such as the collation of survey results, for which offers of assistance are welcome. Contact the Principal.
Donations
Like any state school, we rely on the generosity of our parents, caregivers and wider community to fund the activities that simply cannot be provided were we to rely only upon our central government funding. Current school donations are:
Individual student: $200
Family: $350
Fees can be paid as a lump sum or by instalments made throughout the year. Contact the Resource Centre Manager Mary Hart at Mary.Hart@hvhs.school.nz
Other forms of donation:
Donate a book
The library is very keen to receive donations of books. They are happy to purchase a book in a donor’s name and to provide a suitable insert in the front of the book recognising the donation. Contact Anne Stephenson-Piper at annes@hvhs.school.nz
Donate a trip
Several of our elite academic students, cultural performers and sports competitors find themselves struggling to pay for trips associated with their success. Donations to a confidential fund can be made by contacting the Associate Principal, Steve Chapman at Steve.Chapman@hvhs.school.nz
Donations of uniform (new or used), stationery
We have a confidential service to families whose circumstances require practical assistance to equip children with the necessities of school life. Donations of items or cash in lieu are welcome. Contact the Principal, Ross Sinclair at principal@hvhs.school.nz
Targeted donations
We have a small but immensely valuable group of individuals who provide donations to foster a special interest that is dear to them. The donations pay for awards or scholarships, or for goods or services. Some of these donations are public and acknowledged, and others are anonymous at the donor’s request. Contact the Principal, Ross Sinclair at principal@hvhs.school.nz
