This programme delivers a ‘stepping stone’ into the high school environment. Social skills are integrated with thematically planned course work and taught using co operative learning structures.
Combined English/Social Studies and Maths/Science teaching allows the student and teacher to develop a stronger relationship. Teaching the same students for more hours each week allows staff to identify strengths for development and extension, and also areas of weakness in literacy and numeracy.
Lessons are linked thematically (Integrated Learning) across the Year 9 and Year 10 curricula. This enables students to make links between what’s learnt in the various subjects and see the larger picture.
The ‘social skills’ programme builds students’ ability to work with other people. A structured approach means that all students have the opportunity to learn these skills.
The skills are meta-cognitively built into lessons so that they are repeated and reinforced by each subject teacher. Each fortnight the classes focus on a new skill. Skill development is recognised during the weekly assembly.
