Why see a counsellor?
There are always times in your life when stuff happens and you don’t know what to do with it. At times like this it can help to talk to someone else. As Guidance Counsellors we are trained to help you find your way through.
Possible reasons to see us include:
- Parents separating
- Worried about violence at home
- A death in the family
- Anger keeps getting you in trouble
- Feeling bullied
- Feeling down
- Sexuality issues
- Always in trouble at school and want to make some changes
- Feeling lonely or stuck
- Alcohol or drug problems
Whatever we talk about is confidential. We don’t pass things on to others including your parents, teachers, deans, friends etc. If we feel we cannot help with a problem without talking to other people we will discuss it with you before doing anything further. Your trust is important and we will not risk it by breaking confidentiality.
However, you do need to know that very occasionally when you or someone else is in serious danger, counsellors cannot keep this confidential, because of their duty to prevent harm. They will talk this through with you before acting
Apart from an emergency, it is important to book an appointment time rather than just “turn up”. This way you do not interrupt other peoples’ time or get sent back to class.

We are lucky enough to have four awesome youth workers in our school. They are based in the Student Centre. They run programmes like the Breakfast club, girls or boys personal development groups, lunch time activities and heaps of other stuff. They also do mentoring with students who want a bit of extra support – but don’t want ‘counselling’.
