At Hutt Valley High School we ensure that students are happy, successful and safe. We help each student get involved in activities and assist them to do their very best at their studies. We listen carefully to the reasons for each student being here in New Zealand and we do all we can to help them achieve their goals.We create a special community around our international students.
If their goal is to gain entry to University we will give each student the academic support they need. New Zealand has reciprocity of qualifications with Germany and Thailand. Students can sit NCEA Level Three and gain entry to their homeland universities
International students have a full time International Student Manager dedicated to caring for the student’s needs. We have homestay placement and liaison staff. Our school is a leader in ESOL programmes and support. There are dedicated Kiwi liaison students to provide activities and help internationals make Kiwi friends.
Our International students are encouraged to take a full and active part in school life. There are many sports teams including football, basketball, tennis, badminton, volleyball as well as New Zealand’s major sports; rugby netball and cricket. We teach Dance, Drama and seven different languages; including Spanish, Japanese, Mandarin and German. There is a school orchestra, several choirs and many bands; students can also learn to play an instrument.
The school was established in 1926. There are many famous and notable past students. Perhaps the most prestigious award has been the Nobel Prize won by former student, Alan McDiarmid. Our alumni include top university professors, successful business people, Olympic athletes and many others with success stories.
Hutt Valley High School is NZQA and Ministry registered, and are signatories to the Government’s 'Code of Practice for International students'.
We currently have 60 international students from many countries including:Brazil, Columbia, China, Germany, Japan, Korea, Italy, France, Cambodia and Vietnam
